CLAUDE BRASHERS

Claude Spencer Brashers, of Dallesport and formerly of Lyle, died on Jan. 25, 2005, at Mid Columbia Medical Center. He was 89.
Mr. Brashers was born March 25, 1915, in Ione, Ore. He was the last of four children born to Mattie (Head) and Watt D. Brashers. He went to school in Ione and finished his schooling in LaGrande, Ore. Later he was in the trucking business. That lasted until 1943. At that time he and his brother Bill purchased the J.H. McCoy ranch on High Prairie, naming it the Brashers Brothers Ranch. In 1950, they received the conservation farmer of the year award.
On Sept. 19, 1974, he married Elma (Axtell) Krusow. They continued to farm for two years until the ranch was sold in 1976. The couple then moved to Lyle, where they made their home for 22 years. They moved to Dallesport in 1998. The couple spent much time traveling over the U.S., especially enjoying their trip to Alaska. Their last trip to Arizona was in the fall of 2004. They were members of the Good Sam Travel Club for many years.
In earlier years, Mr. Brashers liked old cars, fishing, boating, hunting and riding horses. Later, he enjoyed family picnics and tinkering in his shop.
He was a 66-year member of the Elks Lodge #303 in The Dalles, Ore. He was also a 29-year member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He was a 25-year member of Columbia Grange #87 in Lyle. He also belonged to the Lyle Volunteer Fire Department.
Mr. Brashers is survived by his wife, Elma, Dallesport; nephews Don Brashers, Lyle, Delbert Brashers, Dallesport, and Jim Brashers, Lyle; and numerous other nieces and nephews. He had no children of his own, but that three stepsons Stan L. Krusow, Umatilla, Ore., Fred C. Krusow, Goldendale, and Dan Krusow (deceased). He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, brother and one nephew.
Memorial services for Mr. Brashers will be at the Lyle Lions Community Center on March 25, 2005, at 2:30 p.m. A potluck luncheon will follow the services.
Memorials may be given to the Lyle Lions Community Center, Columbia Grange #87 in Lyle, or the Lyle Fire Department.
