DATUS E. BARNEDT
Datus E. Barnedt, a resident of White Salmon since 1937,
died Sunday, Dec. 15, in Hood River, Ore., at the age of 84.
He was born April 3, 1901 to Adolph E. and Lelia M. (Coleman)
of Barnedt in Clifford, Mich. The family moved west when he was a child.
He married Leora Genevieve McKee in Stevenson in 1930. The Barnedts moved
to Goldendale for two years while he worked on opening and building Status
Pass. Then they moved to Lyle, where he had a butcher shop.
The couple moved to White Salmon in 1937. They lived
in their present home for the past 48 years. Mr. Barnedt loved to fish and
hunt, and was an amateur prospector. He got his pilot's license at age 56.
He was a heavy equipment operator who took the first shovel-full of dirt
out to begin construction of Bonneville Dam.
Mr. Barnedt was a member of the First Christian Church,
Hoisting and Portable Engineers of Portland, Ore., and the Klickitat Co.
Historical Society.
He is survived by his wife Genevieve, White Salmon; children,
E. Lavonne Mann of Portland, William of Boise, Idaho, Marvin of Otis Orchards,
Wash., Leora Ramsay of Arlington, Ore., John of Asotin, Wash., James of White
Salmon, Robert of Anchorage, Alaska, and Marybelle Barnedt, White Salmon;
sister Mildred Waldo of Dayton, Wash., and brother James of Spokane; 23
grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son,
Fred, and a sister, Lelia Ellsbury.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 18, at Gardner
Funeral Home in White Salmon, with Rev. Jean Marie Wood officiating. Interment
followed in the White Salmon Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Gardner
Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer
Society.
