RAINY NIGHT CAR ACCIDENT KILLS GLENWOOD STUDENT
Shupe's Life Remembered By Friends and Family
By Clinton Irving of The Sentinel

Darcie Ann Shupe was a daughter, sister, friend, student, athlete, outdoors enthusiast, and most of all passionate about everything she did in her 18 years of life. And then a tragic rainy night car accident took her away.
Shupe, of Glenwood, died of head trauma in a car wreck Friday, about 9:30 p.m.
According to the Washington State Patrol, Shupe's 1992 Chevrolet Geo left the road, traveling northbound on Ash Street about 10 miles south of Glenwood, and struck a tree at the driver's door. The accident was discovered at about 7:45 a.m. Saturday morning.
Shupe's life would not have been saved if the wreck had been discovered earlier, according to Sergeant Dale Retzlaff, of the Washington State patrol. She was killed on impact, he said.
The State Patrol is investigating the crash, but Retzlaff said the rainy weather played a part in the accident. Shupe, the only passenger in the car, was not wearing her seatbelt.
Shupe was a senior at Glenwood High School, looking forward to graduation June 7. She lived in Glenwood with her mother Taunie Shupe. She was also the daughter of Bob Shupe, of Vancouver, and younger sister to Marlena Shupe, of Glenwood. Her grandparents Bubs and Marlene Murray also live in Glenwood.
"Certainly she's going to be missed. We're keeping her family, relatives and the students and everybody that knew her in our hearts and prayers," said Glenwood Superintendent and Principal Cal McRae.
Julie Brazzel, a Glenwood teacher and family friend, said school wasn't Shupe's favorite place but she still worked hard and made an impact.
"It's definitely not going to be the same place without her," Brazzel said.
Shupe wanted to become a law enforcement officer. During high school she rode along with several Goldendale police officers and spent a job-shadow day with the Hood River Police Department.
Shupe was best described as "passionate" by many of her friends. They said she always wanted to be the best.
She has played softball for many years and this year she had the chance to play for one of her cousins, on the Klickitat team this spring. Yvette Schultz, coach of the Klickitat Vandals, said after the initial hesitation of playing for a rival team, it wasn't difficult for Shupe to play with girls from a different school.
"She bonded really well with the Klickitat girls," Schultz said. "She was giving us her all, her goal was to go to state."
Schultz explained that Shupe had never been to state and knew the Klickitat softball team had and believed this was the year -- her senior year.
The softball team was meeting Monday afternoon to decide whether to play their rival, Lyle High School, on Tuesday or to postpone the game. Most of the girls "feel Darcie would want us to go and play it," Schultz said.
The team decided they would all wear their uni-forms at Shupe's memorial service and in her honor they would display her jersey, number 18.
According to family friend Raylene Steinbach, Shupe loved riding grandpa's snowmobile with her uncle and eating grandma's spaghetti. She was a "fun loving dare devil little thing." She had the curliest blonde hair and enjoyed going on trips with friends to watch car races.
Shupe also loved kids and the little ones love her, Steinbach said. Shupe was on her way home from spending the day with one of the kids she regularly babysat when the Friday night accident happened.
The funeral service was held at Glenwood High School at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30.
