D.D. UNDERWOOD, PIONEER, PASSED AWAY SUNDAY
The funeral of D.D. Underwood, White Salmon pioneer and
member of the Grand Army of the Republic, was held at the Congregational
church Wednesday afternoon.
Mr. Underwood passed away Sunday night. A complete obituary
will be given next week.

Dan Underwood, 90, pioneer of the White Salmon valley
and Civil War veteran, died Monday of May 2, at his home in that town.
Born in Maryland, July 24, 1843, he could remember traveling
"west" to Ohio, at an early age, in covered wagons. When a lad in his teens,
he joined the Ohio Volunteers, 16th battery, light artillery. Mr. and Mrs.
Underwood came to White Salmon in 1889, homesteaded on Burdoin mountain,
and they have resided either at the ranch, or in their town property, ever
since.
Services in the Congregational church, were in charge
of the Sons of Veterans, Hood River, Ore., of which organization Mr. Underwood
was a member, assisted by Rev. A.E. Derby, and Evan Child post American Legion
of White Salmon.
Besides the widow, Mr. Underwood is survived by an only
child, Mrs. Irma Jarvis, and three grandchildren.
