DOROTHY DELAY RITES FRIDAY
Funeral rites for Dorothy Margaret DeLay, White Salmon,
will be held tomorrow morning at 10:30 from the Gardner Funeral Home. Burial
will follow in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery with Reverend Coulson officiating.
The tragic death by suicide took place shortly after
midnight last Sunday, soon after Mrs. DeLay and her husband, Archie DeLay,
returned from The Dalles. A marital disagreement with apparently responsible
for Mrs. DeLay's desperate action.
GUN
On arriving home, Mrs. DeLay first refused to enter the
house. At her husband's insistence, she went into the house but refused to
go to bed. Shortly after Mr. DeLay when upstairs, he and his 13 year-old
son, Archie Henry, heard an explosion which sounded like a light-bulb bursting.
Investigation discovered Mrs. DeLay's body relaxed in
a sitting position on the davenport. The weapon, a 22 rifle, was still across
her knees. The bullet entered her temple and left powder marks to indicate
suicide.
Officers John Splawn, T. W. Mitchell, Stacey Reeves,
and Sheriff Kaiser were immediately summoned. About 2 p.m., Mrs. DeLay's
remains were transferred to Gardner's funeral home.
INVESTIGATION
Further investigation and hearings have failed to develop
any additional evidence or explanation of the tragedy. Mrs. DeLay was born
in November 3, 1914, at Port Orford, Oregon.
Surviving her are her husband, Archie, her son, Archie
Henry, a daughter, Mrs. Anita Fink, now living in California, one grandson,
and her mother, Mrs. Effie Grigg, Tacoma.
