FORMER LYLE POSTMASTER DIES IN PORTLAND
Dessie M. Hewett was born at DuQuin, Illinois on January
23, 1883 and passed away in Portland, Oregon July 25th, 1970. She spent her
childhood in North Platte, Nebraska and in 1903 came West to Los Angeles,
California.
She was married to Ira B. Hewett in Vancouver, Washington
on Feb. 28th, 1914 and moved to Lyle where she taught school. In 1929 she
was appointed Postmaster and served in that capacity for 24 years. Upon
retirement she lived in Lyle until 1965 when she moved to Goldendale and
resided there until her death.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Martha Petersen
of Portland, Oregon; two sons; Leonard of Weiser, Idaho, and Leroy of Goldendale.
There are three grandchildren: Joan, Carol, and Douglas. In addition, a great
host of friends.
Burial services were held at the Lyle Cemetery with the
Rev. Mr. Arthur J. Stott of Goldendale officiating, on July 27th.
