MR. ELLIS B. HEWETT
Mr. Ellis B. Hewett was born at North Bridgewater, Mass.
in the year 1842 and passed away, June 29, 1930. Funeral services were held
at the Lyle cemetery, Monday, June 30. Rev. Alfred E. Derby, of White Salmon,
conducting the service.
Mr. Hewett lived for three years in Nebraska, then moved
to Olympia, Wash., remaining there for a short time. In 1879 he came to Lyle
and remained in that locality until his death.
He was a charter member of the Columbia Grange, uniting
with this organization before the State Grange was organized, in the year
1889. Mr. Hewett was a Civil War veteran, serving at fortress Monroe.
He left to mourn his loss, three sons, Ira H., Hewett
and Forest Hewett; 12 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren and a host
of friends.
The sympathy of all the Lyle community go out to the
remaining loved ones in the loss of a good father, husband and loving friend.

LYLE PIONEER PASSES
Funeral services were conducted from the family home at Lyle, at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon for the late Ellis Billings Hewitt, who died there Saturday night at the age of 88 years. Interment was in the Lyle cemetery under the direction of Crandall's. Mr. Hewett was born at North Bridgewater, Mass., March 11, 1842. He fought in the Civil war, later going to Nebraska when that state was a wilderness and the plains were covered with buffalo. Mr. Hewett brought his family to Lyle more than 50 years ago and made that district his home until his death. His wife died about two years ago. Surviving are three sons, I.B. and F.L. of Lyle, and Herbert Hewett of Vancouver. Mr. Hewett was a member of the Lyle Grange. -- The Dalles Chronicle.
