EMMA ESHELMAN HIUKKA
Emma Eshelman Hiukka was born November 4, 1885 to John
and Bertha Niemela, and died April 30, 1974 at the age of 88. She was born,
the youngest of seven children, in the Happy Home district west of Centerville.
It was there that she attended school.
In 1905 she was married to Cloud Eshelman. To this union
was born four sons: Harold, Alvin, Wayne and Lemoin. During her busy life
she mothered many children who were temporarily in need of the care and love
that she could give them.
In 1938 her husband died. She remained on the farm which
she managed for many years.
She was a member of the Centerville Church of Christ
and taught in the Sunday school, serving as superintendent. She was also
a member of the Goldendale Woman's Association and Centerville Grange.
After being a widow for 20 years, she became of the wife
of Frank Hiukka on December 14, 1958. After leaving the farm they lived in
Centerville.
She is survived by her husband Frank, her four sons and
their wives, eight grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, seven nephews
and five nieces.
Memorial services were held at the Centerville Church
of Christ, May 4 with Eldon Wiidanen officiating. Soloist were Mary Jaekel,
Wanda Erickson and great grandson Jeff Elwess. Honorary pallbearers were
an elder and deacon of the church and past masters of the Centerville Grange:
Jack Tobin, Quinton Jaekel, Hugh Cameron, Raymond Mattson, Alvin Randall,
and Don Ritzschke. Active pallbearers were grand sons Wayne Eshelman Jr.
of Hillsboro, Merwyn Eshelman, Charles Eshelman, Robert Eshelman of Los Angeles,
great grandson Jeff Elwess and grandson-in-law Bill Deaville of Hood River.
Burial was at the Centerville Cemetery.
