EVERETT HATHAWAY
Everett James Hathaway, 98, longtime resident of the
Lyle area, died at his daughter's home in Portland, Ore., on Nov 3,
2006.
Mr. Hathaway was born Aug. 10, 1908 to George Abert Hathaway
and Nellie Vail Hathaway in College Place. His family was large, with 12
children. They lived in many areas of Oregon, Washington and Idaho. He graduated
from eighth grade in Marsing, Idaho, and went to work with his father and
brothers in heavy construction.
In 1928, he purchased a farm in the Klickitat Canyon,
near Pitt. At the age of 49, he married Karan Martzall on May 4, 1957, in
Stevenson.
A 75-year member of the International Union of Operating
Engineers, he was especially pleased with the work he did in Yellowstone
National Park, and in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska, both before and during
World War II. Local projects included Interstate 84 between The Dalles and
Arlington, Ore., and the John Day Dam. Retiring in 1970, he spent his time
working on his farm, and raising his family. He continued to operate equipment
well into his 90s.
In his fifties, he was an amateur pilot and enjoyed the
freedom and natural beauty that flying offered. Mr. Hathaway volunteered
as a pilot with the Klickitat County Sheriff's Air Patrol, and assisted with
search and rescue activities.
He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren,
traveling, and visiting with family and friends. He loved to read, and was
well educated as a result of his lifelong relationship with books and his
desire for knowledge. He also had a great affection for animals and he especially
loved his dogs.
He was baptized as a member of Jehovah's Witnesses in
1993 in Cascade Locks, Ore. He found great strength and hope in his
faith.
He is survived by his wife, at home; Dean Hathaway, Phoenix,
Ariz.; daughters Annette Phillips, Dayton, Lisa Winnett, Waitsburg, and Sarah
Hathaway, Portland, Ore; brothers Wayne Hathaway, Baker City, Ore., and Lester
Hathaway, Nooksack; five grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren and numerous
nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents, seven sisters,
three brothers, and two sons.
A memorial service will be held on Nov. 18, 2006 at 11:00
a.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1312 W. Riggleman Lane in
White Salmon. A gathering and meal with the family will follow at the Lyle
Lion's Community Center.
Private internment will occur at a later date at the
Balch Cemetery in Lyle.
Arrangements are being handled by Gardener Funeral Home
in White Salmon.
