ELIZABETH PORTER FUNERAL SUNDAY
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 1, at
Gardner's funeral home for Mrs. Elizabeth Jane Porter, 86, of White Salmon.
She died Tuesday, May 28, at Skyline hospital.
She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Earl McCoy of
W.S.; Mrs. Howard Murray of Glenwood; Mrs. Alice Ireland of Gleneden Beach,
Ore.; and son Howard Porter of Lyons, Oregon.

DEATH SUMMONS PIONEER MOTHER
Services were held at Gardner's Funeral Home at 2 p.m.
Saturday, June 1, for Mrs. Elizabeth Jane Porter, 86, White Salmon resident
for 35 years.
She belonged to the Bethel Congregational church of White
Salmon whose pastor, Roger L. Clevenger, officiated. Esther Balsiger sang
"In the Garden" and "Shadows". Burial was in the Odd Fellows cemetery.
Mrs. Porter, youngest of six children, was born in
Burgettville, Calif., July 13, 1870, to Dr. Benjamin Ward Startt and Mary
Eccles Startt. Dr. Startt was an Army physician stationed at Fort Crook,
Calif.
On June 3, 1888, Elizabeth Jane was married to Wm. H.
Porter at McCloud, Calif.; and in 1898 traveled by team and wagon over the
mountain pass by way of the Three Sisters to Prineville, Ore.
Mrs. Porter died Tuesday, May 28, at Skyline hospital.
She was preceded in death by her husband who died in 1934 and by her daughter,
Rose Porter Brewer, who died Dec. 15, 1956.
Survivors are three daughters, Sadie McCoy of W.S.; Flora
Murray of Glenwood; Alice Ireland of Gleneden Beach, Ore.; a son Howard Porter
of Lyons, Ore.; eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Pall bearers were Wm. Balsiger, Joe Venden, Art Brown,
Al Rosevear, Chas. Montgomery and Harry McCoy.

SERVICES FOR PIONEER HELD SATURDAY
Elizabeth Jane Porter passed away at Skyline Hospital
May 28, 1957, and services were held at the Gardner Funeral Home, June 1st
with the Rev. Roger L. Clevenger officiating. She was a member of the
Congregational Church.
Elizabeth Jane Startt was the youngest child of Dr. Howard
Startt and Mary Eccles Startt at Burgettville, Calif. She was born on July
13, 1870.
She was married to William H. Porter June 3, 1888 at
McCloud, Calif. In 1894 the family moved to Prineville, Ore., traveling thru
southern Oregon and across the mountains from Eugene, Ore., by way of the
Three Sisters by team and wagon. The Dalles was the nearest railroad station
at that time. In 1920 the family came to Klickitat county and the past 35
years she has lived in White Salmon, Washington. She was preceded in death
by her husband William in 1934 and a daughter Rose Brewer Porter, Dec. 15,
1956. She leaves 3 daughters and one son: Mrs. Sadie McCoy, White Salmon;
Alice Ireland, Gleneden Beach; Flora Murray, Glenwood; and Howard Porter,
Lyons, Ore.
