ENIDA BROWN

     Enida Brown, 100, a resident of The Dalles, Ore., and a former longtime White Salmon resident, died at Mid-Columbia Medical Center in The Dalles on January 25, 2003.
     She was born on Sept. 18, 1902, in Alma, Neb., the fifth of seven children to Effa (Smith) and Edward Kirkpatrick. The family moved to Cambridge, Neb., while she was a baby and she lived there until the age of 12, when the family moved to Paul, Idaho.
     Mrs. Brown went to college in Albion, Idaho, and received a teaching certificate, which she kept current over the years until she earned her degree, at age 50, from Central Washington college in Ellensburg. She taught school for 35 years.
     Her first job was at a country school near Hazelton, Idaho, where she taught with her sister, Ena. They were well-known as their father was state senator at the time.
     Mrs. Brown then taught school in Trout Lake, where she met her husband-to-be. She taught in Minidoka, Idaho, for 3 years. The rest of her teaching career was in Washington. She taught eight grades in Cedar Valley, Laurel and Mt. Brook. She taught first and second grades in Husum, then first grade in White Salmon for 20 years.
     Mrs. Brown also taught Sunday school for many years at the Congregational Church. Later, she was a member of Grace Baptist Church, then Calvary Baptist Church in The Dalles.
     She married Floyd Brown on April 23, 1926, in Paul, Idaho. They had three children. She was very devoted to them and her grandchildren. She liked cooking, baking, crocheting, tatting, knitting, playing pinochle and traveling.
     Survivors include son, Harold, Seattle; daughter, Nadine McCracken, The Dalles; grandchildren Corinne Johnston, Charleston, S.C.; Dana Brown, Hazel Dell, and Rick Rohweder, Ketchikan, Alaska; great grandchildren, Rochelle Johnston Clark and Tyler Johnston, both of Charleston, Logan and Skylur Rohweder, Ketchikan; brother-in-law Charles Brown and his wife, Nettie, Vancouver; and many nieces and nephews.
     She was preceded in death by all her siblings, her husband of 64 years in 1990, and her son Dale in 1996.
     Funeral services will be held at Gardner Funeral Home at 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 31 with interment following at the Trout Lake Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Jonah Ministries, 31 Little Mt. Road, Trout Lake, WA 98650 or in care of Gardner Funeral Home who handled arrangements.
