OBITUARY
Elizabeth Blackburn was born at Dayton, O., April 6,
1834. She died at her home in Pleasant Valley, Wn., August 16, 1918, at the
age of 84 years, 4 months and 10 days.
She was married to Joel Cowles at Bradford, Iowa, December
16, 1865. To this union were born ten children, five of whom, together with
her husband, preceded her to the other world. Those left are: Mrs. Rachel
Shank of Beech Creek, Ore.; John Cowles of Long Creek, Ore.; Mrs. N. Shank
of Damascus, Ore.; Mrs. Alice Schuster and Mrs. Emma Brownlee of Pleasant
Valley. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Caroline Smith and Mrs. Francis
Metcalf of Iowa, and a nephew, Winifred Cowles, all of whom deeply mourn
her loss. But they sorrow not, even as others who have no hope, for in 1861,
together with her husband, she obeyed the gospel and thereby became a Christian,
which profession she maintained till the time of her death. There are 18
grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren left to mourn and follow her example.
In 1880 Mr. and Mrs. Cowles left Iowa and crossed the
plains with an emigrant party, the journey taking exactly three months. They
arrived in Klickitat county, Wash., November 11, 1880, and located on the
farm where they lived until death overtook them.
