ERMA FREY MARSHALL
Erma Leola Kilroy was born to Daniel and Georgie Kilroy
in 1917, in Joplin, Mont.
In 1930, she was sent to live with her aunt and uncle
McNeel in Trout Lake and to care for their children Robert and Ruth. It was
there she met Spence Frey. The couple was wed in 1934. Their careers would
be intertwined for much of their married lives. He "rode" for the Glenwood
Cattle Association and she was camp cook for fall roundups. He was a packer
for the Mt. Adams District USFS where she cooked for work crews from 1940
till the cookhouse closed in the 60s. She was renowned for the extraordinary
meals she could prepare on a wood cook stove. The couple also raised cattle
on their Trout Lake ranch for many years.
With his retirement in 1964, Erma began cooking at Skyline
Hospital for the next 14 years when she earned her certification as a dietitian.
After Mr. Frey's death in 1978, she retired.
In 1990, she married her eighth grade classmate Ben Marshall.
She enjoyed her new life with him. She was able to travel with family and
friends to such places as China, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and
more.
Mrs. Marshall led a full, unusual and oft times exciting
life. She was a happy person and was able to bring happiness to those around
her.
Mrs. Marshall is preceded in death by her husbands Spencer
Frey and Ben Marshall, grandson Spencer Petrin, sister Irene Chamberlain
and a brother Ray Chamberlain. She is survived by sister Dorothy Shall; children
Lewis Frey, Jacqueline Frey Brandon, Dan Frey and Richard Frey; five
stepdaughters JoAnne Marshall, Darlene Pressler, Jeannie Marshall, Linda
Walker, and Mary Pierce; and numerous grand, great-grand and great, great-grand
children.
Services were held at Trout Lake School on Feb. 17, 2006,
with graveside services at the Balch Cemetery in Lyle.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Gorge.
