AUTO OVERTURNS AND WOMAN LOSES LIFE
An unfortunate automobile accident occurred Monday morning
this week, in which Mrs. Lizzie Marquiss lost her life, and Fred Esteb was
taken to the hospital at The Dalles, suffering from fractured ribs and internal
injuries. Word of the accident was sent to town immediately, and prosecuting
attorney Fred A. Smith and Merle W. Chapman left immediately with the ambulance.
The accident occurred on what was known as the old Bunnell
road, a short-cut from the mountain road to The Dalles, to Wishram. It occurred
on the turn on the lower end. This rowed is very narrow, although it has
been used for years by residents in the vicinity. Mr. and Mrs. James Johnson,
of Wishram, were coming up the road, in route for Portland. They got nearly
to the turn, and seeing the approaching car, stopped. Mr. Esteb, who was
driving the other car, saw them and practically brought his car to a stop,
turning to the edge of the road, but got too far on the outside, and the
car went over the grade, overturning several times.
The car in turning over threw both of the occupants out.
It is said Mrs. Marquiss attempted to get out of the car, and was probably
thrown under it, when it was first over-turned. The car rolled for about
ninety feet, to the bottom of the grade. Persons reaching the wreck said
Mrs. Marquiss was conscious at first, and asked whether Mr. Esteb was badly
injured. She passed away shortly thereafter, and Mr. Esteb was taken to Wishram
for examination, and later taken to The Dalles. He had several ribs broken,
and some internal injuries. He was getting along all right at last reports.
The remains of Mrs. Marquiss were brought to Goldendale.
It was found that she had all of her ribs on one side broken, some ribs on
the other side, head cuts and a broken neck. She figured in an auto accident
several years ago, receiving a broken back, and remained in the hospital
for about a year before recovery.
The funeral was held Wednesday from the Chapman Chapel,
with Rev. R.C. Young conducting the service, interment following in the
Centerville Cemetery. Mrs. Marquiss was 51 years of age and leaves two sons
in the immediate family, Kenneth and Herbert. An obituary appears elsewhere
again this issue.

"Wishram"
About seven o'clock Monday morning while taking a short cut to Portland over the Coffield hill, which is a narrow one way road, Jim Johnson and wife met a car driven by Fred Esteb accompanied by Mrs. Lizzie Marquiss. In trying to avoid a collision, Mr. Esteb jammed on his brakes with all his strength. The sudden stop caused the car to roll down the hill about a hundred and fifty feet, fatally injuring Mrs. Marquiss and severely bruising Mr. Esteb. Mrs. Marquiss passed away before she could be removed from the wreck. The remains were taken to Goldendale by the coroner. After dressing his wounds Mr. Esteb was taken to The Dalles hospital by Dr. Shorts.
