WALLIE K. PIERCE
Wallie Kuhnhausen Pierce, of Glenwood died Friday, November
5, 1993 at the home of her son in Craig, Alaska. Mrs. Pierce, 85, was born
January 13, 1907, the youngest child of pioneers Oscar and Antonie Kuhnhausen.
She attended Glenwood schools, graduating in 1925. After
high school she attended Bellingham Normal School (now Western Washington
University) and Central Washington in Ellensburg. She received a teaching
certificate and taught in area schools including Lakeside, Horn's Mill, Bingen,
and in Brinnon on the Olympic Peninsula.
While living in Brinnon she met her future husband, Jacob
L. Pierce. They were married on June 21, 1936 in Goldendale and settled in
Glenwood where they ran a dairy and later a beef cattle operation on the
Kuhnhausen family farm. She took time off to raise her family. In 1961 she
began teaching full time in Trout Lake. She took leave of absence in 1967
to attend Central Washington University where she received her bachelor's
degree. She retired from teaching in 1972.
After retirement she became active in numerous organizations
including Glenwood Grange #94, Ladies Aid, Women's Club, Washington State
and Klickitat County Retired Teachers Associations, Glenwood Rodeo Association,
Camas Prairie Pioneers, Klickitat County Historical Society and the Glenwood
Fire District where she served as clerk for several years.
Mrs. Pierce was preceded in death by her husband, Jake;
a daughter, Mary; sisters, Gerda Richelderfer and Sophie Wellenbrock; and
her brother, Osmar Kuhnhausen. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law
Bonnie and Jim Kendall of White Salmon, her son and daughter-in-law Glenn
and Mary Pierce of Craig, Alaska, and her daughter and son-in-law Lila and
Mike McDonald of Kennewick.
She is also survived by her grandchildren Debra Woodward,
Ron Whitmire, Amy and Jake Pierce, Craig and Chris Trout and Tony and Arthelda
Avila, as well as her great-grandchildren Arlie and Ashley Woodward and MaKayla
Whitmire and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday,
November 13, 11 a.m. at the Pioneer Memorial Community Church in Glenwood.
Contributions may be made to the Mt. Adams Cemetery
Association, Glenwood Ladies Aid Bible Fund, to the charity of choice. Gardner
Funeral Home in White Salmon is in charge of arrangements.
