ETHEL BRUCE
95-year-old Ethel Viola Bruce died on Monday, Nov. 22,
2004, at the home of her granddaughter in Mill A.
Mrs. Bruce was born in Muskogee County, Okla., on March
16, 1909 to Sarah Elizabeth (Keith) and Benjamin Vanbrunt. She was the fifth
of eight children.
She married Floyd Westly Baker in 1929. They had two
children. She married Roy Jefferson Bruce on Oct. 5, 1940, in Pentecostal
Holiness Church in Wagnor, Okla. They had one child. In 1958, the couple
moved from Peggs, Okla., to Bingen. Mrs. Bruce lived in Bingen until moving
to Mill A due to illness in July 2004.
Mrs. Bruce was a great example in the community. If anyone
was sick, she was one of the first to prepare a meal and make an encouraging
visit. She wouldn't let visitors leave without sharing a meal or sweet dessert
(sweets being her favorite); an armful of tasty fruits and veggies from her
own garden, a Bible verse, or an offer to study the Bible with them.
She enjoyed knitting and crocheting, her garden, preserving
produce and sharing it with friends and family. But her greatest joy came
from sharing her Bible-based faith. She was not one who had religion as part
of her life, it was her whole life. As a young person, she sang alto in the
choir and taught Sunday school. After extended research of the Bible, she
was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses on Aug. 5, 1941. She will be
remembered for her volunteer work as a teacher of the Bible. She lived a
full meaningful life by putting Jehovah God first in her life.
Survivors include daughter Lois Stevens, White Salmon;
son Ronnie Bruce, Bingen; grandchildren Sue LaFollette, Joel Stevens, Miriam
Knowles, Hope Jones, Rick Baker, Randy Bruce, Jeff Bruce and numerous
great-grandchildren and great, great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by all her brothers and sisters,
husband Roy Bruce, and son Floyd Alvon Baker.
A memorial service was held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's
Witnesses in White Salmon at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, with Rob
Butler officiating.
Memorials may be made to Kingdom Hall, PO Box 682, White
Salmon, Wash. 98672.
