MAN KILLED IN LOGGING ACCIDENT

     Eugene William Smith, 41, a log truck operator for the Carson Lumber Co., of Stevenson was killed at noon on Wednesday when the top log of the load on his truck rolled on him as he was adjusting binder chains.
     The accident occurred 19 miles north of Carson. Smith is survived by his wife and three children. His wife Charlotte and three children, Robert Lee, Patricia Ann and Dorothy Marie, the latter of Richland. He had lived in Stevenson since 1946. His father, Charles H. Smith lives in White Salmon as does a sister, Mary Funderburk. A brother Lee Smith, lives at Stevenson.
     Eugene William Smith was born on January 4, 1915 at Bickleton.

TRUCK DRIVER CRUSHED BY LOG IN FATAL MISHAP

     Eugene William Smith, 41, of Stevenson was fatally injured Wednesday forenoon when a log fell from his truck and crushed him.
     The accident occurred at the Carson Lumber Co. landing on Panther Creek Road at 11:05 a.m. Smith, had driven his truck, loaded with logs, away from the landing to fasten the load binders. As he began to clamp down the first binder, the top log rolled off and fell on him. He died before the county ambulance could reach him. The body was taken to Gardner's Chapel in White Salmon.
     Mr. Smith was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and the United Loggers Association. He was born January 4, 1915 in Bickleton, Wash. He had resided in this area the past 10 years.
     Surviving are his wife, Charlotte; three children, Robert Lee and Patricia Ann, living at home and Dorothy Marie, living in Sunnyside; his father Charles A. Smith of White Salmon; a brother Lee H. Smith of Stevenson and a sister, Mary Funderburk of White Salmon.
     Funeral services have been set for 2 p.m. May 30 in the Seventh Day Adventist Church in White Salmon. The Rev. Paul Gordon will officiate. Interment will be in the White Salmon Oddfellows cemetery.

     Funeral services for Eugene William Smith were held on Wednesday, May 30, at 2 p.m. in the Seventh-day Adventist church in White Salmon with the Rev. Mr. Paul Gordon officiating. Interment was in the White Salmon IOOF cemetery.
     Eugene William Smith was born on January 4, 1915 at Bickleton and since 1946 made his home in Stevenson. He was killed in a logging accident on Wednesday, May 23 about 19 miles north of Carson on the Panther Creek road. A log came off of the top of his load crushing him to death as it rolled.
     He is survived by his wife Charlotte A. Smith of Stevenson and three children, Robert Lee and Patricia Ann, both of Stevenson and Dorothy Marie who lives in Richland; his father, Charles A. Smith F. and sister Mary Funderburk, both of W.S. and a brother, Lee Smith of Stevenson.
