FLOYD G. MARTIN
Former White Salmon mayor Floyd G. Martin, 83, died September
25 in Portland following a long illness. Funeral services were at Bethel
Congregational Church where he was a member, and interment was in White Salmon
Cemetery.
Mr. Martin was born June 16, 1893 in Tacoma, and moved
with his family to Cascade Locks, Ore. in 1895. He moved to White Salmon
when he was 11, and helped his father clear ten acres of land for a fruit
orchard. In 1974 he and his wife, Ella, moved to Milwaukee, Ore..
Mr. Martin did orchard work until 1920, when he operated
a battery shop and then a garage for general repairs. Soon after he acquired
a Union Oil service station. He retired in 1965 after serving 35 years as
distributor with the Union Oil Company.
He served two terms as mayor of White Salmon, with two
additional terms on the city council. During his time as mayor, the Buck
Creek water system for White Salmon was accomplished.
Survivors of Mr. Martin include his daughter, Mrs. Paul
Kringelhede of the Portland area; seven grandchildren and nine
great-grandchildren. His wife preceded him in death by less than a year.
A son, Warner, preceded Mr. Martin in death in 1960. Before his death Warner
was in business with his father.
