FRANK LEATON SERVICE HELD WEDNESDAY
Funeral services for Frank Leaton, resident of Glenwood,
Washington were held September 18th. Services were at the Glenwood Community
Church at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Roger Clevenger of White Salmon officiating.
Interment was in the Mt. Adams Cemetery at Glenwood.
Mr. Leaton was born February 3rd, 1898 at Lyle, Washington,
the son of Addie and William Leaton. At the age of five his family moved
to Camas Prairie and the remainder of his life was spent in Glenwood.
He was married to Dorothy Anrig in 1948 and to this union
were born a daughter and a son, Faye and Clavin Leaton. He is also survived
by two step-children; Mrs. Sylvia Holly and Phillip Anrig. There are five
sisters: Ethel Jensen of Bickleton, Washington, Orpha Duus of White Salmon;
Cassie Bertschi of B.Z. Corners; Hazel McCredy of Bickleton; and Winnie McCredy
of Yakima. Also a nephew, Bill Leaton with whom he was a partner in farming
and cattle business.
Mr. Leaton worked through the years on many community
affairs and was a member of the Glenwood Rodeo, the Camas Prairie Pioneer
Association, the Cattlemen's Association, the Glenwood Grange and the BPOE
Mt. Adams Elks Lodge No. 1868.
Active Casket bearers were: Rosco Emery, Ollie Kreps,
Howard Murray, Merle Akerill, Ernest Childs, Fred Steinbach.
Honorary casket bearers were: Russell Kreps, Osmar
Kuhnhausen, Frank Lyle, Herman Kuhnhausen, Art Ladiges, Albin Bergland.

FRANK LEATON DIES IN SADDLE
Funeral services for Frank Leaton, 65, well-known Glenwood
cattleman, were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18 in the Pioneer Memorial
Community Church of Glenwood. Burial was in the Mt. Adams Cemetery at Glenwood.
Gardners Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
The Rev. Roger Clevenger of White Salmon and the Rev. T.E. Ratcliff of Glenwood
officiated.
Bearers were: (active) Roscoe Emery, O.P. Kreps, Howard
Murray, Merle Akerill, Ernest Childs, Fred Steinbach Jr.; (honorary) Russell
Kreps, Osmar Kuhnhausen, Frank Lyle, Herman Kuhnhausen, Art Ladiges and Albin
Bergland.
Frank died as he lived, in the saddle. Cattlemen say:
"A better man never rode the high country. He rode straight up to the end
of the trail."
With him when death occurred at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept.
14, were O.P. (Cap) Kreps and Danny Ohnemus of Laurel. The three were inspecting
the range at the head of Dry Creek east of Snowplow mountain, miles southeast
of Mirror Lake.
Kreps and his son-in-law, Ohnemus, were riding about
50 feet ahead of Leaton when they noticed he horse with an empty saddle.
they looked back and saw Frank on the ground where he had fallen, apparently
from a heart attack.
Ernie Childs of Trout Lake recruited a Forest Service
crew of eight men to bring Leaton's body back to Mirror Lake where Gardner's
ambulance and a doctor from white Salmon were waiting.
Frank was born Feb. 3rd, 1898 at Lyle and moved to Camas
Prairie with his family when he was five years old. He spent the rest of
his life in Glenwood Valley farming and raising cattle.
He was married to the late Dorothy Nickols Anrig in 1948.
She died on August 26, 1961, leaving him with four children: two stepchildren,
Phillip Anrig and Mrs. Daniel (Sylvia) Holly; a daughter, Faye Leaton, now
14; and son, F. Calvin Leaton, 9.
Frank is also survived by five sisters: Ethel Jensen
of Bickleton and Sunnyside; Orpha Duus and Cassie Bertschi, White Salmon,
Winifred McCredy, Yakima and Hazel McCredy of Bickleton. Also a nephew, Bill
Leaton, Frank's partner in the cattle business.
Frank was a member of the Glenwood Rodeo Assn., Camas
Prairie Pioneer Assn, Washington State Cattlemen's Assn, Mt. Adams Elks Lodge,
Glenwood Grange, trustee of the Pioneer Memorial Community Church of Glenwood,
the Klickitat County Livestock's Assn. and president of the Mt. Adams Cattle
Assn.
