FRED KORTHASE
Mr. Fred Korthase, for nearly twenty years a resident
of Lyle, known and respected by a large number here, was born in Germany,
Sept. 25, 1864 and passed away in Portland July 20th.
While still a young lad he came to this country and back
in Illinois began training in the trade of blacksmith, which vocation he
followed faithfully for over fifty years.
In 1888 he was united in marriage to Emily Gurrard in
Illinois. Three children were born to this union; Clarence Korthase, of
Goldendale, Wn., Joe Korthase, of Lyle, Wn.; and James Korthase of Crescent
City, Calif., all of whom survive.
Moving with his family from Illinois Mr. Korthase maintained
a shop in Michigan for a time and then in 1906 came west to Washington setting
up a shop in Aberdeen. Seven years later he brought his family to Lyle where
they have resided ever since. In 1917 Mr. Korthase took work with the S.P.
& S. railroad, which took him much of the time to their shops at Wishram.
He was still in the employee of the railroad when the heart malady became
aggravated which necessitated his coming home several weeks ago. Gradually
this condition became worse, and in spite of the thoughtful ministry of kind
hands and medical skills he passed away Wednesday, July 20th, at the St.
Vincents hospital in Portland. He was in the sixty-seventh year at the time
of his death.
As a boy Mr. Korthase had been confirmed in the Lutheran
church and until a few years ago when his hours of work prevented, used to
frequently enjoy the services together with his wife at the little local
church in Lyle. He was a member in good standing of the Modern Woodmen and
also of the Order of Railroad Employees.
Mr. Korthase was the last of his own generation of his
family to go. He in turn leaves to mourn his passing, his widow, Mrs. Fred
Korthase, of Lyle, the three sons previously mentioned and their children
and many friends who remember him as a fine old tradesman and workman and
an honest neighbor and friend.
Funeral services were held at the Lyle gymnasium, Saturday
afternoon, July 23rd with Rev. E. W. McAbee officiating. Interment was in
the Lyle cemetery.

"County News"
The many friends of Fred Korthase were grieved to learn of his passing away last Wednesday evening at St. Vincents hospital in Portland, where he had been taken a few days previous for treatment. He had been ill for several months. While his condition was known to be serious, there was still hope for improvement.
