SERVICE FOR GRACE LOCKE AUGUST 23RD
Grace Creed Locke was born Dec. 7, 1885 in Union Grove,
Gentry County, Missouri, the daughter of Martha and Thomas Creed. She started
her teaching career in 1904 in Missouri. She was united in marriage on June
14, 1911 to Emmett Locke in Stevenson, Washington, after settling in Klickitat
County from Missouri. After her marriage she taught school in Lyle, Washington
until 1913 and also taught in the Snowden and Klickitat Heights areas during
the 20's. From 1929 to 9932 she taught the 8th grade class at White Salmon.
Returning to Washougal, she taught at Mt. Pleasant for
a time and retired from her teaching career in 1948.
Her husband, Emmett, passed away in1952.
She was a member of the Spanish-American War Veterans
Auxiliary at the National Retired Teachers Association
Mrs. Locke passed away at a nursing home in Battle Ground,
Washington on August 19th at the age of 89 years.
Surviving are: two sons, Kenneth and Gordon Locke, both
of Washougal; five grandchildren, Peggy Ann Schurm, Betty Lou Barber, Carolyn
Leonard (all of Washougal), Jill Erickson of Eugene and Timothy Dickerson
of Albany, Oregon; ten great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Edith Creed
of Klamath Falls, Oregon; three nieces, Naomi Dwyer of Pacifica, California,
Iva Lee Ridgley of Springfield, Oregon, Darlene Hall of Red bluff, California;
and a nephew, Woodrow Estes of Kansas City, Missouri.
Funeral services were held Saturday, August 23rd, 10:30
a.m. in Brown's Stoller Roselight Chapel in Washougal with Rev. George Jefferson
of Washougal officiating. Interment was held at 2 p.m. in the White Salmon
Cemetery. Gardner's Funeral Home of White Salmon was in charge of arrangements.
