GEORGE HETTRICK
George Wade Hettrick, a-time Glenwood resident, died
Dec. 21, 1999, at Evergreen The Dalles, in The Dalles, Ore., at the age of
82.
Mr. Hettrick was born Feb. 2, 1917, in Delores, Colo.,
to William J. and Elizabeth (Gerton) Hettrick. At a young age, his parents
died and he went to live with an aunt in Grangeville, Idaho.
He attended school through the eighth grade and later
went to California and was drafted into the Army on February 79, 1941. He
served in the South Pacific in World War II and was discharged on June 29,
1945.
Mr. Hettrick married Elizabeth "Betty" Akerill on the
May 18, 1945, and after the war they moved to Glenwood, arriving by taxi.
They raised their family in Glenwood and Mr. Hettrick worked for the Klickitat
County Road Department, before working as a diesel mechanic in the truck
shop at the J. Neils, later in St. Regis, mill for 39 years. He retired in
1979.
Mr. Hettrick loved to work in his yard and garden. He
also enjoyed the outdoors, picking huckleberries and tinkering in his shop.
He collected everything and never tossed anything out.
Mr. Hettrick is survived by his wife Elizabeth "Betty";
daughters Lillie Arends, The Dalles, Ore., and Barbara Mills, Goldendale;
grandchildren Beth Perkins, Vancouver, Ellen Anderson, Condon, Ore., Terri
Perez, Mosier, Ore., Charles Mills and Waymeth Mills, both of Goldendale;
and five great-grandchildren.
Services for Mr. Hettrick were held Dec. 29, 1999, at
1 p.m. at the Pioneer Memorial Community Church in Glenwood, with Pastor
Sandy Strait officiating.
Memorials may be given in to the Glenwood Grange.
Arrangements were handled by Gardner Funeral Home of
White Salmon.
