GWEN WOODS
Gwendolyn Woods died at her home in Murdock on Saturday,
June 29, 2002, at the age of 82.
She was born in Morrisburg, Ontario, Canada, on April
1, 1920, to Frederick and Evelyn (Crobar) Cassel. Her father died six months
before she was born, and very soon after her birth, her mother became ill,
so Mrs. Woods moved to Missouri where she was raised by her
grandparents.
On Jan.10, 1942, Mrs. Woods married Robert Newton Woods
in Alton, Mo. When Mr. Woods went to war early into their marriage, she helped
in the war effort by working in a gunpowder factory in Lawrence, Kan. The
couple later moved to Corvallis, Ore., in 1947, then to Warrenton, Ore.,
and settled in Bingen in the early 50s.
Mrs. Woods worked at Underwood Grocery and Underwood
Fruit. She and Mr. Woods opened second-hand stores in Bingen, White Salmon,
Carson and Stevenson during the 1960s.
Mrs. Woods was a 29-year member of the Eagles. She loved
cats and her grandkids, whom she called "sugar." She took care of everybody
and had the best fried chicken in the world. She was active until the
end.
Survivors include husband Bob Woods, Murdock; son Keith
F. Woods, Murdock; daughter Sandra Lofthus, Stevenson; sisters Eileen Thompson
and Mary McCaffery, both of Saskatchewan, Canada; brothers Earl Declare,
Saskatchewan, and Charles Shirk, White Salmon; four grandchildren and 21
great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 5, 2002,
at 2p.m. at Gardner Chapel in White Salmon with interment at the White Salmon
Cemetery.
