HARRISON BOZE, BORN IN SLAVERY, PASSES AWAY
Harrison Boze died Thursday, March 31st, at the home
of Mr. & Mrs. Eph Thomas near this city at the age of 83 years.
He was born in Fairfax county, Virginia, on March 30,
1843. He was born in slavery and when just eight days old was sold for $100,
and raised with his young Master who was of the same age. They served in
the Civil War together, and when his young Master was killed, he was sent
home and given his freedom by his mistress. He was one of the many refugees
in the Carolinas, and was married in 1868. There were no children born to
this union but they raised three girls--Mrs. Eph Thomas of this city being
the only one living. His wife died at Trout Lake in 1914, where they had
lived since 1899. Mr. Boze was a member of the Trout Lake church, a Mason
and an ex-master of the Masonic lodge (colored) in Ohio.
The funeral was held at the grave at Trout Lake Wednesday,
Rev. Young of White Salmon Methodist presiding.
