Laurel, Wash., March 30 -- A very sad accident occurred last Friday when Herman C. Bertschie met his death by being struck by a falling snag. The road crew were falling a tree, and Herman with his father were standing near by the tree and when it fell, a snag striking him. It hit the boy causing instant death. His father jumped behind a tree or he might have met the same fate. The community extends their sympathy to the bereaved family in their sad hour.

HERMAN C. BERTSCHI STRUCK BY FALLING TREE AND KILLED
Young Man Instantly Killed When Struck By Tree, As Friends Are Unable To
Prevent The Accident
GLENWOOD - an accident resulting in the death of Herman
C. Bertschi, 18 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Cleveland Bertschi of Glenwood,
occurred near there Friday at 9:00 A.M..
He and his father were driving cattle along the Medley
canyon road, when they stopped to talk to Walter Kunz and George Gilmore
who were felling a tree. As it fell it struck an old snag which bounced from
the ground toward the lad. His attention had strayed from the operation;
consequently when the blow came he met it directly, not having seen it coming
in time to leap aside as his father had done.
When the onlookers rushed to his side he was found to
be dead - one leg was broken, an arm broken, and his skull shattered. The
body was taken to White Salmon for burial arrangements.
The funeral services were held at the Glenwood Church,
Sunday, at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Good in charge.
The youth is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cleveland
Bertschi, three sisters, LuEllen, Doris, and Hazel, and his grandparents,
Mr. and Mrs. William Leaton and Herman Bertschi, all of Glenwood. Also there
are many relations and hosts of friends to mourn his loss.
Last week the family lost their home and personal effects
in a fire.
