HENRY DECHAND
Henry Joseph Dechand, a Glenwood native, died Feb. 24,
1993, in Portland. He was 62.
Mr. Dechand was born July 17, 1930, in Glenwood to Mary
Alice (Odle) and Henry A. Dechand. He attended local schools and enlisted
in USMC in 1951. He was given a medical discharge 10 months later. He was
employed by J. Neils Lumber Co., SDS Lumber Co., and in later years owned
an operated his own logging company.
He was a member of the Mt. Adams Elks Lodge 1868, Aerie
2210 FOE, and Christian Cowboy Association.
The great love of his life was his music. He began his
music career at the age of 18 as a singer with a local country-western band.
He taught himself the guitar in 1962, wrote and recorded several country-western
songs, and for more than 25 years played music in local clubs. Mr. Dechand
is survived by his daughter Ginger Norconk, White Salmon; step-daughters
Sandy Weisner, Medford, Ore., Dorothy Schwartz, San Louis Obisbo, Calif.,
and Donna Messer, White City, Ore.; step-father William Guffy, Glenwood;
brothers Harry Dechand, Glenwood, Leon Dechand and Leroy Dechand, both of
Medford, Ore. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ann.
Services for Mr. Dechand were held Monday, March 1, 1993,
at 1 p.m. in the Pioneer Memorial Community Church in Glenwood, with Rev.
Wilderbuer officiating. Interment was private.
Contributions may be given to the Henry Dechand Memorial
Fund, in care of POB 629, White Salmon, Wash. 98672. Gardner
Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
