HUGH SHIELDS
Hugh Joseph Shields, a longtime White Salmon resident,
died Dec. 7, 1998, at Emanuel Hospital in Portland, Ore., at the age of 81.
Mr. Shields was born March 21, 1917, in Sprague to James
E. and Mary 0. (Hecker) Shields. He moved to Montana as a young child and
then to Yakima Valley as a teenager, where he farmed. He married Mary Hecker
in Toppenish on Aug. 20, 1947. They moved to White Salmon in 1951 and he
bought a shoe repair business which he operated until retirement in 1988.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and
volunteered with St. Vincent DePaul Society for many years. He was named
Citizen of the year in 1984 and always helped the Little League by donating
his work and repair of equipment. He loved to watch football and play pinochle.
He also enjoyed crossword puzzles.
Mr. Shield is survived by his wife, Mary, White Salmon;
sons Hugh and Michael, both of White Salmon, and Jacob, Husum; daughter Elaine
Clubb, White Salmon; brothers Francis Shields, Brownstown, Joe Shields, White
Swan, and James Shields, Wapato; sisters Margaret Lyon and Lois Boiselle,
both of Yakima, and Betty Stephens, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; eight grandchildren
and five-great grand-children.
Funeral services for Mr. Shields were held Friday, Dec.11,
1998, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in White Salmon, with Father
Tom Dahlquist officiating.
Interment was at White Salmon Cemetery.
Arrangements were handled by Gardner Funeral Home, White
Salmon.
