HARRY CLATERBOS
Harry Claterbos, for many years vice-president of the
First National Bank of Portland (recently changed to the First National Bank
of Oregon), died Monday morning from a heart attack in Portland.
Harry was born and lived in White Salmon, later served
in the sheriff's office here, and was employed in the local bank.
Later he served as vice-president of the bank of White
Salmon.
He leaves many friends here and throughout the county;
some of his children were born in Goldendale and he and his family were old-time
residents in the White Salmon area.
Harry was a charter member of Louis Leidle Post No. 116
of Goldendale.

DEATH CALLS BANK OFFICIAL
Harry Claterbos 1st National Aide
Harry L. Claterbos, Portland banker, died Monday after
suffering a heart attack.
Funeral will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at St. Michael and
All Angels, Episcopal Church. Rev. George R. Turney will officiate. Funeral
arrangements are in charge of J.P. Finley & Son.
Mr. Claterbos, who resided at 7920 SW Ruby Terrace, was
born Dec. 15, 1895, in White Salmon, Wash. At his death he was vice-president
and assistant manager of the main office of the First National Bank of Oregon.
He joined the State Bank of Goldendale, Wash., as a
bookkeeper in 1920 and a year later returned to White Salmon to join the
Columbia State Bank. He was cashier of the bank when he resigned in 1933
to join the First National Bank of Portland at The Dalles as assistant manager.
He served as manager of the First National branches at
Union, Coquille and Astoria before his promotion to vice president and assignment
to the main office in 1948.
Many Offices Held
He was elected president of the Oregon Bankers Assn.
in 1948. During his career, he served as president of the Chamber of Commerce
in Astoria, White Salmon, Union and Coquille. He also served as president
of the Astoria Rotary Club, past master of the White Salmon Lodge, AF&AM,
and was a member of the Eastern Star, American Institute of Banking, Associated
General Contractors, American Legion, Portland Golf Club and the Episcopal
Church.
He is survived by the widow, Harriet M.; one daughter,
Mrs. Ray Gaulke, Hood River; one son, Harry L. Jr., Clarkston, Wash., and
eight grandchildren.
The family suggested that any remembrance be in the form
of a contribution to heart or cancer funds.

DEATH SUMMONS HARRY CLATERBOS
Services for Harry L. Claterbos, prominent Portland banker
and former resident of White Salmon, were held at St. Michael's Episcopal
church, Portland at 1 p.m. Wednesday, August 13. Rev. George Turney
officiated.
Burial was at 4 p.m. in the White Salmon Odd Fellows
cemetery with graveside rituals by the White Salmon Masonic Lodge 163 of
which Mr. Claterbos was Master in 1926.
He was born December 15, 1895 on the Old Adams ranch,
now part of the F.D. Wallace property, five miles north of W.S. He died at
his home, presumably from a heart attack, early Monday, August 11.
As an orphan lad he held various odd jobs at the old
White Salmon wharf and assisted his uncle, John Wyers in his meat market.
He attended grammar school and high school in White Salmon.
Following World War I in which he served, he was briefly
a Klickitat county deputy sheriff under Ira Henderson.
In 1920 he began his banking career as bookkeeper in
the State Bank of Goldendale. A year later he returned to White Salmon to
work in the Columbia State Bank.
He rose to cashier before resigning in 1933 to join the
First National Bank of Portland at the Dalles as assistant manager. He was
manager of First National Bank branches at Pendleton, Union, Coquille and
Astoria before his 1948 promotion to vice president of the main office in
Portland.
In 1948 he was elected president of the Oregon Bankers
Association and during his career he headed chambers of commerce in Astoria,
White Salmon, Union and Coquille.
He was a past president of the Astoria Rotary Club, a
member of the Order of Eastern Star, American Institute of Banking, Associated
General Contractors, American Legion, Portland Club and the Episcopal Church.
He is survived by his widow Harriet whom he married in
1917; one son, Harry L. Jr., Clarkston, Wash., and one daughter, Mrs. Ray
Gaulke, Hood River; eight grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Walter Hunsaker,
White Salmon.
Pall bearers were Earl Dean, Floyd Martin, Roy Anthon,
Bob Overbaugh, John Childs, Harold Larsen. Honorary pall bearers were Harry
McCoy, Wade Dean, Roy Heaman, Fred Thomas and Roy Cain.

SERVICE HELD WEDNESDAY FOR HARRY CLATERBOS
Funeral services for Harry L. Claterbos, former White
Salmon resident was held on Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Portland at St. Michael
and All Angels church, NE 43d and Broadway, Portland.
Committal services were at the IOOF cemetery in the White
Salmon at 3:15 p.m..
Surviving are: his wife Harriet, a son Harry L. Jr.;
a daughter, Mrs. Ray Gaulke and a sister, Mrs. Walter Hunsaker of White Salmon.
Friends who prefer, may contribute to the Oregon Heart
Association.
