IRVIN DEMENT IS KILLED IN MILL ACCIDENT
Irvin Edward Dement of White Salmon was instantly killed
last Friday at the Hopp-DeWilde mill at Gilmer when crushed by the carriage.
A log had rolled off of the carriage and while Dement and other mill crew
members were attempting to lift it back, the carriage moved crushing him
before he could escape.
Gordon Wright of Trout Lake received a broken leg, but
escaped the fate of his co-worker.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 5 at the Seventh
Day Adventist Church with interment at the Odd Fellows cemetery. Arrangements
were handled by the Gardner Funeral Home.

Irvin Dement Killed At Hoppe DeWilde Mill July 1; Gordon Wright Of Trout
lake Suffers Broken Leg
Irvin Edward Dement, 34, of White Salmon was accidentally
killed in an accident on Friday, July 1st, at the Hopp DeWilde Lumber mill
at Gilmer by the unexpected return of the carriage. From information received,
it was understood that a log had rolled off the carriage, and while the mill
crew were helping to lift it back, the carriage suddenly moved. All the men
except Dement jumped to safety. Dement was crushed between the bumper and
the carriage and died instantly, it was stated.
Another mill worker, Gordon Wright, of Trout Lake, narrowly
missed the same fate, but escaped with a broken leg.
Dement was born August 29th, 1914, and had lived most
of his life in White Salmon. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Mary Dement,
a resident of that community.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 6th, from
the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Interment was made in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.
The Gardner Funeral home was in charge of the arrangements.
