IRVING HUDSON EVANS
Irving Hudson Evans was born December 16, 1864 at Paw
Paw, Michigan, and died from a cerebral hemorrhage as his farm home on Burdoin
Mountain, Tuesday, April 26, 1938 at the age of 73 years, 4 months and 10
days.
Mr. Evans was one who always loved the soil and all growing
things, therefore in early life he chose to become a farmer and turning his
education and work toward agriculture. While farming in Michigan he married
Jennie Cribbs Evans. They had one daughter, Antoinette. In 1907 they came
west and purchased their farm near White Salmon. When his wife died 25 years
ago, he took the little girl and returned to Michigan where he remained for
four years.
While in his home state he married Cora Woodruff Evans
who passed away in the White Salmon, Washington, December 11, 1934.
Every since 1917 Mr. Evans resided on his farm, which
he and Mrs. Evans developed from raw land to one of the most productive farms
in this section. A patriotic citizen, an active worker in things that pertained
to community betterment, he was also the first to assist any neighbor or
friend who was in need or in distress. He was a member and trustee of MacFarlane
Presbyterian church at Bristol and a member of the Mountain View Grange.
Mr. Evans had suffered from poor health for the past
two years and quite recently underwent an operation in Portland. He leaves
to mourn him, his daughter, Antoinette Evans Rothbell, and her husband, Roland
Rothbell, his grandson, Duane and his sister-in-law, Miss Mary B. Woodruff,
all of White Salmon, and one brother, Leonard Evans of Battle Creek, Michigan,
besides a host of friends.
Of Irving H. Evans it is truly said that not only was
he a wonderfully kind and wise father, husband, neighbor and friend, but
also that he constantly put into practice such love for his fellowman that
he thought and spoke nothing but good of all, and like-wise all who knew
him could speak only with love and affection for him.
Funeral services were conducted in the Congregational
church, White Salmon, April 28, by his friend, the Rev. Mr. George Good.
Mountain View Grange held the graveside rites at the I.O.O.F. cemetery.
