IRENE WAYNE BEGIN
Trout Lake native Irene Wayne Begin of Bingen died July
28 in The Dalles. She was 85.
She was born Sept. 4, 1904, in Trout Lake to Anna P.
(Peterson) and Iver Wang. She grew up there, and later graduated from Columbia
High School.
In 1938, she married Ernie Begin. The couple moved to
Alaska and settled in Aniak. He had a mill and she waas the postmistress
until retirement. They moved to White Salmon and owned Larsen's café
for several years. The couple then moved back to Alaska, where Mr. Begin
ran unsuccessfully for governor after Alaska became a state.
He died in 1965, and Mrs. Begin moved to the Bingen-White
Salmon area. She loved to crochet.
Mrs. Begin is survived by her daughter Susan Rogers of
Santa Rosa, Calif.; sister Ruby Parton of New Pine Creek, Ore.; two
granddaughters, Sharon and Sonva; and numerous nieces and nephews, including
Jean Corum of White Salmon. She was preceded in death by brothers Palmer,
Jude and Alfred, and sisters Bertha, Cora and Jessie.
Graveside services were held Thursday, Aug. 2, at White
Salmon Cemetery, with Rev. Arthur Dickie officiating. Memorials may be given
to a charity of choice.
