IVAN S. ELMER
Ivan S. Elmer, a longtime Trout Lake resident, died June 30, 2000,
at the Hood River Care Center where he had been a resident since suffering a
stroke on Christmas Day 1999.
Mr. Elmer was born in Trout Lake Valley on Nov. 25, 1917, to Grace
William (Stanley) and C. Albert Elmer. His grandparents, Albert and Regina
(Schmid) Elmer were early valley settlers. He was raised in the valley and
graduated from Trout Lake High School in 1937.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After his discharge, he
returned to Woodland, where he married Beatrice A. Koch on July 31, 1946, in
Vancouver.
After returning to Trout Lake, Mr. Elmer worked in the lumber industry
until the mid 1950s when he became a dairy farmer, an occupation which he
followed until 1978 when he retired.
After retirement, he enjoyed woodcrafts, making quilts, playing
solitaire and gardening. Mr. Elmer was a member of Trout Lake Grange No. 210
and the American Legion.
Mr. Elmer is survived by his wife of 54 years Beatrice, Trout Lake;
children Michael W. Elmer, Underwood, daughter Phyllis J. Christensen,
Goldendale, Phillip W. Elmer, Trout Lake, Ella Stivers, Oakridge, Ore., and
Jeffrey L. Elmer, Portland; siblings Eugene G. Elmer, Lucille V. Moseby,
Leonard N. Elmer, Ruth M. Jones, Judith A. Pesznecker; five grandchildren;
and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents,
brothers Christ Albert Elmer and Clyde Elmer, and sister Lillian L.
Williamson.
Mr. Elmer chose to donate his body to OHSU for medical research. A
memorial service will he held at the Trout Lake Baptist Church on July 22,
2000, at 1 p.m. His ashes will be interred at Trout Lake Cemetery at a later
date.
