JOHN ACKLEY

     John Ackley, 88, Civil War Veteran, died at his home in Gladstone, Ore., last Wednesday a week ago.
     He was born in Delaware county, Ohio, March 28, 1845. He moved with his parents to Wayne county, Iowa, at the age of nine years. He answered the call to his flag, and enlisted in Iowa City, Iowa, Aug. 7, 1862, to serve 3 years or the duration of the war.
     He saw much hard service and was in many engagements. He joined Grant's army and was in the Vicksburg campaign. He was engaged at Fort Gibson, Magnolia Hills, Vicksburg, Champion Hills, Black River Bridge, Winchester, Fisher Hills, Cedar Hills and a number of other battles. After these engagements the regiment wintered in the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia. He served under Grant, Logan, Sheridan and Sherman. He was honorably discharged at Davenport, Iowa, Aug. 5, 1865 by reason of the close of the war.
     He was united in marriage to Sarah Ann Bowden at Iowa City, Iowa, July 16, 1867, which from this union were born four children.
     He moved to Olympia in 1899 where he resided 3 years. He moved to the Mountain Brook country in 1902 where he homesteaded. Later he moved to White Salmon. In 1909 he went to Gladstone, Ore., where he remained until his death.
     He leaves to mourn his loss one daughter, Mrs. Daisy Plank, of Prosser, Wash., two sons, C.N. Ackley, of White Salmon, and Jack of Grants Pass, Ore., and 8 grand children and 11 great grand children.
     He was laid away at the Odd Fellows cemetery in White Salmon, Wn., Friday September 23.

JOHN ACKLEY TO BE BURIED HERE TODAY

     John Ackley, 88, civil war veteran, died at his home in Gladstone, Oregon, Wednesday.
     Mr. ackley is survived by his widow, Addie Ackley of Gladstone; a daughter, Mrs. Daisy Plank of Prosser, Wash., and two sons, Jack of Grants Pass and Newton Ackley of White Salmon, Wash. He was born in Ohio March 26, 1845, and served in the Iowa infantry.
     Funeral services will be held at White Salmon, Wash., Friday at 11 A.M.
