DEATH OF DR. SMITH
Dr. J.A. Smith died at his home three miles up the valley
on Wednesday, Nov. 29th, of apoplexy. He was born in Cincinnati, O., March
1845. He was educated as a dentist and practiced in Piqua, Ohio, and Chicago,
Ill. He served throughout the Civil War and later became an officer in the
Lancaster Academy at Lancaster, Ohio. His fondness for boys and ability to
understand and control them led to his accepting the position of superintendent
of one of the departments of the State School for Boys at Meriden, Conn.
This position he held for twenty-one years. Subsequently he filled a similar
position at the State Training School at Red Wing, Minn..
About two years ago he went to live in Kennewick, from
which place he moved to White Salmon a few months later. The Doctor and Mrs.
Smith had since lived on their fruit ranch, formerly known as the Clarkson
orchard. The Doctor entered enthusiastically into the work on the ranch and
the place shows many improvements as the result of his activity and interest.
He has been from the start a good and loyal man in his neighborhood and won
many friends. The doctor had a very pleasant sense of humor in life and this
quality made him a genial and ever welcome friend in his home and in his
community. He is survived by his wife and one brother in Hartford, Conn..
Funeral services will be held at the home on Friday at
11 a.m. and burial will be at the Underwood cemetery.
