JACK CANFIELD DIES AT 70; WAS RETIRED MILLWRIGHT
John C. "Jack" Canfield of Home Valley, a retired millwright
died in a White Salmon hospital Tuesday, January 12, 1982 at the age of 70.
Mr. Canfield had enjoyed good health until two years
ago when he was stricken with cancer.
He was born February 10, 1911 in Graceton, Minnesota,
the son of Clavert and Mary Canfield. He was five years old when his father
died and an important influence on his life was his grandfather, also Calvert
Canfield, with whom he lived much of the time.
He came west during World War II and was employed as
a welder in the Vancouver shipyards. Following the war he became a millwright
at Bingen and then moved to Trout Lake where he was employed with the Hollenbeck
Lumber Co. for 15 years.
Mr. Canfield and Evelyn Peterson were married in September,
1961 in North Bonneville. They moved to Home Valley in 1965 and Mrs. Canfield
was employed with the Hegewald Timber Co. for a short time before his retirement.
He was interested in hydraulics and his hobby was the
design and construction of water rams for irrigation. He built several for
friends in this area.
In retirement, Mr. Canfield and his wife enjoyed travel
and spent several winters in Arizona before he was stricken.
Mr. Canfield is survived by his wife Evelyn at their
Home Valley home; a son, Fred Canfield of Port Angeles, Washington; three
step-daughters, Bernice Bradshaw of Walla Walla, Carol Bradshaw of Dixie,
Washington and Lynn McCuistion of Underwood, Washington.
He is also survived by seven half-brothers, Don Nystrom
of Klickitat, Fred Nystrom of Gresham, Oregon, Carl Nystrom of Carson, Barnie
Nystrom of Stevenson, Bob and Ted Nystrom of Seattle and Lyle Nystrom of
California; and two half-sisters, Pauline Lea of Bingen and Shirley Andre
of Hood River.
Graveside funeral services were held at Trout Lake Cemetery
Wednesday, January 13 with Minister Ford Bradshaw officiating. Gardner's
Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
