JOHN C. CARSTENS

     John C. Carstens, a Lyle resident who disappeared April 20, 1987, in the Klickitat River near Lyle, was found dead May 14, 1987, at the age of 27.
     Mr. Carstens was born May 9, 1959 in Aberdeen, Wash., to Maxine (Bailey) and Ralph V. Carstens. He came to Lyle in 1973 and attended school there. He worked as a fire fighter and tree planter for the Forest Service in Carson. He also worked for Oregon Cherry Growers in The Dalles. He attended Lyle Christian Assembly.
     He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Maxine and Leonard Dave, Lyle; brothers, Dwight F., Vancouver, Ralph V. Jr., Homer, Alaska, Robert L., Shelton, and Richard F., Lyle; sisters, Dorothy F. Olsen, Battle Ground, Linda M. Boyle, Harrah, Wash., Karen L. Swanson, Yakima, Cheryl S. Emerson and Joleen M. Carsten, both of Dallesport, and Marianne Ibarra and Cindy K. LeMieux, both of The Dalles.
     Services for Mr. Carstens was held Monday, May 18, 1987, at 2 p.m. at Gardner Funeral Home in White Salmon, with Rev. Les Haarstad officiating. Interment was in Lyle Balch Cemetery.

     Funeral services for John C. Carstens, 27, Lyle-Murdock area resident, will be Monday at 2 p.m. in Gardner Funeral Home in White Salmon, Wash. He accidentally fell into the Klickitat River near Lyle April 28 and his body was located at the mouth of the river May 14.
     Mr. Carstens was born May 9, 1959 in Aberdeen, Wash. to Ralph and Maxine Bailey Carstens and moved to Lyle in 1973. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service as a firefighter and tree planter at Carson, Wash., and had worked for the Oregon Cherry Growers in The Dalles. He attended the Lyle Christian Assembly.
     Survivors include his mother, his stepfather, Leonard Dave; brother, Dwight, Vancouver, Wash.; Ralph Jr., Palmer, Alaska; Robert, Shelton, and Richard of Lyle; sisters; Dorothy Olsen, Battle Ground, Wash.; Linda Boyles, Harrah Wash., Karen Swanson, Yakima; Sheryl Emerson, Joleen Carstens, Dallesport; Marianne Ibarra, and Cindy LeMieux, The Dalles.
     Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Les Haarstad and burial will be in the Balch Cemetery at Lyle.

     John C. Carstens, 27, of Lyle drowned April 28 when he fell into the Klickitat River.
     Mr. Carstens was born on May 9, 1959 in Aberdeen, Wash. to Maxine Bailey and Ralph V. Carstens. He moved to Lyle in 1973 and attended school there.
     Later he worked as a fire fighter and tree planter for the Forest Service in Carson. He also worked for Oregon Cherry Growers in The Dalles. He attended Lyle Christian Assembly.
     He is survived by mother Maxine Dave and stepfather Leonard Dave, both of Lyle; brothers, Dwight of Vancouver, Ralph of Homer, Alaska; Robert of Shelton, Wash.; and Richard of Lyle; sisters, Dorothy Olsen of Battleground, Linda Boyle of Harrah, Wash., Karen Swanson of Yakima, Cheryl Emerson of Dallesport, Joleen Carsten of Dallesport, Marianne Ibarra of The Dalles, and Cindy LeMieux of The Dalles.
     Funeral services were held April18 at the Gardner Funeral Home, White Salmon, with the Rev. Les Haarstad presiding. Burial took place at the Lyle Balch Cemetery in Lyle.
