JOHN D. PEARCE
John D. Pearce, formerly of White Salmon, of late Hood
River. died May 30. He was 81.
Mr. Pearce was born in Ft. Fairfield, Maine on April
2, 1909. At the age of 2, he and his family moved west to make a home in
the Mt. Brook district. He grew up on the family ranch, helping his father
with his orchard business. He attended White Salmon schools, and graduated
from Columbia High School.
Before serving in the U.S. Army, Mr. Pearce attended
college in Ore-gon and worked in the White Salmon Post Office. After his
discharge, he met and married a young school teacher working in Lyle named
Esther B. Marcks in 1946. His wife preceded him in death in 1990.
Mr. Pearce was a member of the Bethel Congregational
Church, the American Legion, BPOE. He was well-known in the community for
being kind and helpful as he became acquainted with people from his career
with the White Salmon Post Office.
Due to a weakened heart condition, Mr. Pearce, in October
1992, moved to Down Manor in Hood River. He continued to maintain his home
in White Salmon, which had always been a source of delicious fruits from
his trees. His garden was his hobby and pride.
He is survived by his three daughters, Barbara Phillips
of Dallas, Texas, Terry Turkson of Vancouver, British Columbia and Jeralyn
Snellgrove of Alexandria, Va.; six grandchildren two great grandchildren;
brother, Amos Pearce of White Salmon; sister, Betty Baker of Hood
River.
Funeral services were held Friday at Gardner's Funeral
Home in White Salmon with Reverend Sigmund Podlozny, Jr. officiating. Committal
followed at White Salmon Cemetery.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Esther B. Pearce
Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of Key Bank in White Salmon.
