JOHN HENRY MCAVOY

     A memorial service for John Henry McAvoy of Forest Grove will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Masonic & Eastern Star Home in Forest Grove. Private burial will be Tuesday in Balch Cemetery in Lyle, Wash.
     Mr. McAvoy died of complications arising from a heart ailment Tuesday in the Masonic home in Forest Grove. He was 84. He was born Aug. 12, 1909, in Spring Grove, Wis., where he grew up and attended schools. He was an engineer for the Milwaukie Road railroad and Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railroad. He married Ethel H. Bradley on Oct. 22, 1945, in Nevada.
     He moved to Ashland in 1948 and worked for a lumber mill, retiring in 1973. He and his wife moved to Forest Grove in November. He was a past master of the Masonic Lodge No. 23 in Ashland.
     He is survived by his wife; stepson, the Rev. Robert Maxson of Vancouver, Wash.; two grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.
     The family suggests that remembrances be contributions to the Masonic & Eastern Star Home Endowment Fund in Forest Grove.

JOHN MCAVOY

     John Henry McAvoy of Forest Grove died Feb. 17 at the Masonic & Eastern Star Home in Forest Grove, of causes related to aging. He was 84.
     Memorial services were held at the Masonic & Eastern Star Home, with interment at Balch Cemetery in Lyle, Wash.
     McAvoy was born Aug. 12, 1908, in Spring Grove, Wis., the son of John A. and Louise (Knott) McAvoy. He was raised and educated in Wisconsin.
     He worked between Tacoma and Vancovuer as an engineer for the Milwaukie Road and Spokane, Portland and Seattle railroads.
     In 1945, he married Ethel H. Bradley. They moved to Ashland in 1948 , where he worked for a lumber mill until retiring in 1973. He and his wife moved to Forest Grove in 1992.
     He had been a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Ashland. He  had been a member and past master of the Ashland Lodge No. 23 A.F. & A.M., had been past high priest of Siskiyou Chapter No. 21 Royal Arch masons, a member of Hillah Temple of Shrine in Ashland, Malta Commandery No. 4 Knights Templar, Table Rock Council No. 15 Cryptic Masons in Medford, and alife member of Alpha Chapter 1 O.E.S. in Ashland.
     His hobbies included railroading, masonry and fishing.
     Survivinging are his wife, Ethel McAvoy of Forest Grove; a stepson, Robert Maxson of Vancouver, Wash.; grandsons Douglas Maxson of Ashland and Scott Maxson of Birmingham, Ala.; three great-grandchildren, a nephew; two nieces; and family members Marguerite Matusak and Nancy Johnson.
     The family suggests remembrances may be contributions to the Masonic & Eastern Star Home Endowment Fund, in his memory.
