JOHN TOBIN
John Tobin, an octogenarian pioneer of the Klickitat
Valley, and widely known among the old-timers, who died at his residence
in The Dalles Sunday, was buried in the local Catholic Cemetery today. Funeral
services were conducted by Rev. Father Carey of the Catholic Church in this
city. Despite his advanced age, Mr. Tobin remained active to the last, and
was stricken with paralysis while engaged in mowing his lawn a few days before
his death.
He was born in Ireland, in 1853, and came to Canada with
his parents when a small boy. When a young man he came to the United States,
and located in the State of Minnesota. In the early 70's he emigrated to
Oregon with his family, and in 1876 came to the Klickitat Valley and took
up a homestead of the rich swale land near Centerville. Mr. Tobin acquired
other lands, and until he sold his holdings and retired about fifteen years
ago, was one of the leading grain growers of the swale section.
He has resided in The Dalles for the past fifteen years,
but has made frequent trips to Goldendale and the Centerville country to
visit with friends and relatives.
Mr. Tobin is survived by his wife, Mrs. Henrietta Tobin
and ten children, all of the children born to the union being living, except
one child that died in infancy. The surviving children are:
