JOHN CAVEN KILLED IN AUTO WRECK IN OREGON
Funeral Of Well Known Hotel Man Held Here Tuesday
The funeral of the late John Caven was held Tuesday in
the White Salmon M.E. Church, Rev. Roy Jenkins, officiating and the remains
laid to rest in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.
John Caven was killed in an auto accident near Fossil,
Oregon, where he had gone to attend a pioneer picnic. He had resided in Fossil
and Condon before coming to White Salmon. He was born in Wilson county, Kansas,
February 20, 1864, son of Mr. and Mrs. G.J. Caven, and came to Oregon with
his parents in 1883, settling in Eastern Oregon. He engaged in the barber
business which he followed for 41 years. He was married to Miss Lydia A.
Kraus, June 9, 1902 at Fossil, Oregon. To this union were born four children,
Melvin, Elna, Mary and Arthur. The Cavens moved to White Salmon in 1908,
Mr. Caven entering the barber business here from which he retired in 1921
to go into the hotel business and has operated the Washington Hotel of this
city since.
Elna Caven, the oldest daughter, died in 1925 and Mrs.
Caven passed away in 1929. He is survived by two sons, Melvin and Arthur
and one daughter, Mary Schweitzer, of Vancouver; five grandchildren, two
brothers of Shaniko, Ore., and two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Wilcox, of Hillsboro,
Ore., and Mrs. Kate Pinkham, of British Columbia.
Mr. Caven was a member of the Baptist Church at Fossil,
Ore., a member of the Mt. Adams camp W.O.W. and Neighbors of Woodcraft, of
this city.

John Caven was killed on August 1st near Fossil, Ore., when his car struck a soft shoulder of the highway. He had been a resident of the White Salmon community for 30 years. The body was brought there for burial. He was a native of Kansas, born February 20, 1864.
