THREE YOUNG MEN KILLED IN CRASH OF LIGHT PLANE NEAR RANGER STATION AT TROUT LAKE ON SUNDAY
Three young men were killed in a flaming plane crash
early Sunday evening at approximately 7 p.m. on the grounds of the Trout
Lake District Ranger station.
Investigation of the cause of the crash was being
investigated by authorities. The motor of the plane was dug from the ground.
It was reported to have been buried about two feet.
Two employees of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest,
and one an employees of S.D.S. Lumber Co., died instantly Sunday when the
four-place Piper Cherokee plane rented from Mid-Columbia Aviation at The
Dalles Airport dropped to the ground back of the Trout Lake ranger station
about 35 feet from the Mess Hall.
Killed were Leland S. Otey, 28, Vancouver, James L. Roth,
20, Harrington, Wn., and Jerry Schmid, 19, Trout Lake.
The plane caught fire, and the bodies were badly burned,
the Klickitat County Sheriff's office reported. Forest Service personnel
put out the flames.
The plane crashed shortly after 7 p.m., Sunday, came
down to a low altitude as it flew over the ranger station, then fell sharply
to the ground, authorities said.
The plane had been flown earlier in the day from The
Dalles Airport to Bellingham. The flight plan was reported to have called
for a return trip via Ocean Shores, Wash.
Otey and Roth were employees of the Forest Service and
Schmid was an employee of S.D.S. Lumber Co.
