LULA ALTHEA DURKEE
Lula Althea Durkee of northeast Portland died Saturday
in a Portland care center from complications resulting from diabetes. She
was 78.
And there will be no service. A private burial will be
in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Appleton, Wash.
Mrs. Durkee was born March 1, 1912, in Michigan. Her
father was a timber faller, and the family moved quite often. She came to
the Portland area as an infant, and moved to the Appleton, Wash., logging
camps when she was 10. She graduated from White Salmon High School in 1931.
She married L. "Pete" Durkee in Goldendale in 1930. Her
maiden name was Stafford. Mr. Durkee worked in the saw mills, and they moved
throughout the Northwest until settling in the Portland area in 1942.
She worked in the Portland shipyards during World War
II. She and her family lost their home in flood in Vanport in 1948.
Survivors besides her husband include a daughter Naoma
Weisner of Vancouver, Wash.; son Rodney Durkee of Portland; six grandchildren;
and two great-grandchildren.
