LILLIAN HAMM
Lillian Dagney Haug Hamm died at home on June 30, 2002,
after a short illness, at the age of 88 years and 1 day.
She was born on June 29, 1914, in Tacoma, the fifth of
seven children of Casper Carlson Haug and Olga Marie Eliassen. She grew up
in Tacoma, Grandview and Montesano. She graduated from Montesano High 9chool,
the youngest in her class at the age of 16 - she had skipped the third grade
and was at the top of her graduating class. She worked several years as a
housekeeper for a family in Tacoma and for a time as a secretary in a Tacoma
office.
She and Marshall Hamm were married during the Depression
on Dec. 28, 1935, in Port Orchard. Soon after their marriage, Mr. Hamm found
work on the railroad and the couple spent the next few years traveling with
the railroad, finally settling in Lyle shortly after the war.
Mrs. Hamm's lifelong talent was her music. She played
for her church, the Grange, the school, weddings, funerals and almost any
gathering where music was included. This began as backup for her parents
as a young child, a short time as pianist in a dance band, and concluded
at the last church service she was able to attend on June 16, 2002.
Mrs. Hamm served her community in many ways, school board,
election board, and secretary of most any organization she was involved in.
The Hamms had the Chevron Service station in Lyle, a Massey Ferguson Tractor
dealership, several apartments in town and a large ranch just out of town.
They shared many aspects of these endeavors, but Mrs. Hamm was always in
the background doing the organization and book work.
She was always ready to share her warm smile with all
she met. She was a wonderful cook and a strong Norwegian. She will be missed
by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by three children Barbara Sexton, William
Hamm and Marcia Goodwin; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Hamm was preceded in death by her husband Marshall in June 1995, grandson
Scott Sexton in May 1995, son-in-law Richard Sexton in 1982, and all of her
siblings.
Services for Mrs. Hamm will be held at Gardner's Funeral
Home on Friday, July 5, 2002, at 10 a.m. with graveside services at Lyle-Balch
Cemetery for family and friends following.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Gorge.
