LEON SCHMID
A memorial service for Leon Schmid will be held Saturday,
Oct. 30, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the Trout Lake School. Mr. Schmid died on Oct.
8, 2004, at the Mid Columbia Medical Center in The Dalles.
Mr. Schmid was born July 27, 1927, on the family farm
in Trout Lake to John and Alice (King) Schmid.
Growing up in Trout Lake was fun. Sleigh rides to school
in winter; classes missed to take students by bus to ice skate on the lake;
and not much homework because teachers knew students had farm
chores.
After graduation in 1947, Mr. Schmid went to Alaska with
his father to help his brother Loren work his gold mine. He spent the winter
working in Portland. Mr. Schmid returned to Alaska in 1948. In the fall,
he was back on the farm and remained there.
Mr. Schmid married Esther Williams, a school teacher,
on Nov. 27, 1954. In 1955, Mr. Schmid's parents transferred the farm to him.
Mr. Schmid enjoyed reading history books, listening to old time songs and
opera music.
Mr. Schmid was on the building committee when the Mt.
Adams Baptist Church was built. He served as secretary for DHIA for 20 years,
on the community council, the Glacier Springs Water Board, and always had
a leadership role on the J.C. Hoke Ditch Company.
In 1985, the farm business was transferred to his son.
Mr. Schmid continued to get up with the cows and worked on the farm with
exciting enthusiasm.
Mr. Schmid is survived by his wife, Esther; children
Charlene Schmid, Robert Schmid, Linnaea Schmid and Caroline Shields; nine
grandchildren Nathan, Andrew, Dale, and Mikael Dick, Peter, Aaron and Anna
Schmid, and Caleb and Emily Shields; two brothers Forrest and Stan Schmid;
and three sisters Helen Dolezal, Dorothy Potter and Vesta Libby.
Memorials may be sent to the Mt. Adams Baptist Church
for children and youth projects, to the Trout Lake School for learning projects
concerning the historic or scientific study of natural resources in Trout
Lake.
