LUELLEN WARD

     LuEllen Bertschi Ward died on April 2, 2001, in Gresham, Ore., at the age of 82.
     She was born the second of six children to Vilas Cleveland and Cassia (Leaton) Bertschi on Dec. 5, 1918, at her paternal grandparents' home in Laurel. She attended Lakeside, a one-room country school through the eighth grade. She loved the long nature walks taken with special teacher Wallie Kuhnhausen and the Christmas programs supervised by Sue Dymond Morehead. She went to live with her grandparents, William and Addie Leaton. in order to be close enough to attend high school in Glenwood. She graduated in 1935.
     On Sept. 5, 1936, she married Frank E. Ward. The couple made their first home in J. Neils Lumber Company's Camp Seven. Later, they moved to Glenwood and established a Grade A Dairy, which they ran for 10 years. Mr. and Mrs. Ward started college in 1958 at Western Washington University, from which they both earned teaching degrees. She taught upper elementary grades in The Dalles. Ore., and White Salmon for several years.
     Mrs. Ward loved to travel and pretty much covered North America, Iceland, Europe, Asia and Central America. Their son. Dr. Donald Ward, did Africa for the couple by proxy. Besides traveling, she enjoyed reading, sewing, antiques, square dancing and playing bridge.
     She was a 7th decree Grange member and was active in the Camas Prairie and Vicinity Pioneer Association, the Glenwood Ladies Aid, Delta Kappa Gamma, the Pioneer Memorial Community Church in Glenwood and the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Portland, Ore.
     Mrs. Ward is survived by husband of nearly 65 years Frank; children Juanita Rolph, Glenwood, Dr. Darold Ward, Missoula, Mont., and Sue Atkins, San Angelo, Texas; sister Hazel Parsons, BZ Corners; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
     A memorial service for Mrs. Ward was held Friday April 6, 2001, at 10 a.m. at Village Chapel in Gresham, Ore. with a graveside service the same day at 3 p.m. at Mt. Adams Cemetery in Glenwood.
     Memorial may be made to the Mt. Adams Cemetery in care of Gardner Funeral Home, PO Box 390, White Salmon, Wash., 98672, who was in charge of arrangements.

      A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, April 6, 2001, in Village Chapel in Gresham for LuEllen Bertschi Ward, who died April 2 at age 82.
     Mrs. Ward was born LuEllen Bertschi on Dec. 5, 1918, in Laurel, Wash. She taught school in Oregon, Washington and Pennsylvania, and retired in 1979. For the last five years she lived in Portland. In 1936, she married Frank E. Ward.
     Survivors include her husband; daughters, Juanita Rolph and Sue Atkins; son, Dr. Darold; sister, Hazel Parsons; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
     Interment in Mt. Adams Cemetery in Glenwood, Wash. Remembrances to Mt. Adams Cemetery. Arrangements by Gardner Funeral Home in White Salmon, Wash.
