LEON WALDO BERRY

     Leon Waldo Berry of White Salmon died in his home on July 15, 1995. He was 87.
     Mr. Berry was born in Summerville, Ore., and moved to Enterprise, Ore., at age 3 or 4, traveling by boat, team and wagon from Portland, Ore. He moved to La Grande, Ore., a couple years later, then after another two years there, the family moved again to Enterprise. He moved to Pendleton, Ore., and completed the first two years of high school there, then finished high school at La Grande. Berry then hitchhiked to Corvallis, Ore., to attend Oregon State College, and graduated in 1929.
     After that, he returned to eastern Oregon where he worked for several area newspapers. He married Elizabeth "Betty" Hesse in 1932; moved to Bingen in 1939, where he was publisher of the Mt. Adams Sun until selling to the White Salmon Enterprise in 1968. Betty died in 1975. Berry married Helen Graham, and they had six and a half happy years together until her death in 1982. He married Edna Gevedon in 1984.
     Berry was a member of the Bingen City Council, fire department, Eagles, Elks, Masons, Royal Arch, Knights Templar, Lions Club, Rotary Club, United Methodist Church, Toastmaster's Club and Eastern Star, holding many offices in each. He was awarded the Mt. Adams Chamber of Commerce's Lifetime Service Award in 1985. He loved to play golf, bowl and pitch horseshoes. Mr. Berry is survived by his wife, Edna Berry, of White Salmon; his son, James Leon Berry, of Winchester, Virg.; his daughters, Margaret Elizabeth "Peggy" Baker of Gladstone, Ore., and Susan Marguerite Lamoreaux of Chehalis, Wash.; his brothers, Pete Berry of Bingen, Robert Berry of Washougal, Wash., and Leton Berry of Union, Ore.; his sisters, Ella Stenke, of Beaverton, Ore., Noreen Sana, of La Grande, Ore., and Orpha Pieper of La Grande, Ore.; by Edna's children, June Sadleir, of Hayden Lake, Idaho, and Jerry Rantala, of Vancouver; and Helen's son, Richard Graham, of San Diego, Calif., and by seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
     He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Berry, who died in 1975; his second wife, Helen Graham Berry, who died in 1982; two brothers, Guy Berry and George Berry; and two sisters, Mabel Smith and Leona Brooks.
     Contributions may be given to Dollars for Scholars, c/o Gardner Funeral Home in White Salmon; or the Methodist Church Parking Lot Fund, c/o United Methodist Church in White Salmon.
     Funeral services for Mr. Berry were held July 19, 1995, at 11 am. at United Methodist Church in White Salmon, with the Rev. William Romeijn officiating. Graveside rites were given by the White Salmon Masonic Lodge.

     Leon Waldo Berry, 87, of White Salmon, died in his home on July 15, 1995. He was born in Summerville, Ore. He attended Oregon State College graduating in 1929.      Funeral services were held July 19 at the United Methodist Church in White Salmon with the Rev. Willem Romeijn officiating. Graveside rites were given by the White Salmon Masonic Lodge.
