LEMUEL YARNELL
Lemuel W. Yarnell, a homesteader in the Major Creek area,
died March 9 at Valle Vista Nursing Home in The Dalles at the age of 97.
Mr. Yarnell was born Aug. 30, 1885 in the Indian territory
that is now Oklahoma state and came out west when he was 13 years old. In
1906 he filed a claim on a homestead on Major Creek and built his first home.
Two years later on June 24, 1908 he married Lula May Branaman.
In 1913 he moved from the homestead to Laws Corner to
manage the White Salmon Fruit Ranch. He lived in this area most of his life
logging, operating his own sawmill and later farming. In 1962, he retired
from the farm and moved to town.
His wife Lula and one son, Alonzo "Lon" preceded him
in death. He is survived by five daughters, Iva Rogers, Portland, Mildred
Dickey, Dorothy Abken and Mary Jane Arnold, all of White Salmon, and Berniece
Wright, Anchorage, Alaska; four sons, Donald C., Underwood, L. Raymond, Bingen,
and Lenard L. and George "Pete," White Salmon; 34 grandchildren, 63
great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mr. Yarnell were held Saturday at
Gardner Funeral Home with Michael Yarnell officiating. Interment was in the
Klickitat County Cemetery District 1 cemetery.
