MARY CAIN
Mary E. Cain, a prominent longtime resident of White
Salmon, died at Hood River Care Center Saturday at the age of 90.
Mrs. Cain was born in Goldendale Dec. 16, 1892, to Tunis
and Lucinda J. Hinshaw. The Hinshaw family moved to White Salmon in 1911
to enter the general merchandise business. Mrs. Cain was a member of the
first class graduated from the White Salmon High School.
In 1916 she married Roy H. Cain, for 27 years a teacher
and administrator in the White Salmon Valley Schools. Their 54-year marriage
ended with his death in 1970. With the exception of a few brief years of
teaching in other communities, the Cains made their home in White Salmon.
They were especially interested in youth activities which they energetically
led through their church and lodge affiliations including Odd Fellows, Rebekahs,
Masonic Order and Order of Eastern Star. They were also local leaders in
Rainbow Girls for many years.
Mrs. Cain is well remembered for her long tenure as choir
director for the White Salmon Methodist Church. More recent affiliations
include the PEO Sisterhood and the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Kathleen Levin, Sunnyvale,
Calif., and Phyllis Evans, College Place. A nephew, Keith McCoy of Trout
Lake, also shared the Cain home for many years.
In addition to seven grand-children and 11
great-grandchildren, Mrs. Cain has three surviving sisters, all residents
of White Salmon, Laurie Hodson, Agnes Coughlin and Alice Withey.
Services were held at the Adventist Church in White Salmon
Tuesday, with Pastor Keith Canwell officiating. Burial followed at the White
Salmon Cemetery.
