MAXINE DAVE

     Maxine Dave, 80, of Murdock, died in The Dalles on Feb. 9, 2004.
     She was born Jan. 2, 1924, in Aberdeen, to Henry Franklin and Violet (Turner) Bailey. Dave grew up in Toledo, and graduated from high school at the top of her class at age 16. During World War II she worked in Portland at the shipyards, painting ships. Dave married Ralph V. Carstens on April 1,1944. She dedicated herself to raising her nine birth children, one adopted child and two stepchildren. They lived and fished in Cello and ran a small custom fish cannery. Her hus-band died in 1972. In October of 1972, she married Leonard Dave, Sr. They moved to Murdock in 1973 and have made their home there for 31 years. Maxine continued fishing with Leonard and also worked as a supervisor at The Dalles Cherry Growers Association. In the early 1990s, she retired.
     Dave had many interest and hobbies, including crosswords, game shows, flower gardening, picking huckleberries, fishing, hunting and the outdoors. She loved to watch Leonard fish.
     Her parents; first husband, Ralph Carstens, and a son, John Carstens, preceded her in death. Survivors include her daughters, Lynda Tabor of Prosser, Karen Swanson of Goldendale, Cheryl Emerson of Dallesport, Joleen Carstens of White Salmon, Marianne Kishwalk of Murdock and Cindy Carstens of The Dalles; sons, Ralph Carstens of Dallesport, Robert Carstens of Shelton and Richard Carstens of Carson; stepchildren, Dwight Carstens of Vancouver, Dorothy Olson of Cathiamat, Floria Dave of Yakima, Leonard A. Dave, Jr. of Dallesporet, Randy Dave of Wichita, Kans., Leon Dave, Diane Dave, Sandy Dave, James Dave and Marie Dave, all of Pendleton, Ore.; 30 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
     A funeral service was held Feb. 12 at Gardner Funeral Home in White Salmon with burial following at Lyle Balch Cemetery in Lyle.

The couple moved to Murdock in 1973 and made their home there for 31 years.
     She continued fishing and also worked as a supervisor at The Dalles Cherry Growers Association. In the early 1990s, she retired.
     Mrs. Dave had many interests and hobbies, including crosswords, game shows, flower gardening, picking huckleberries, fishing, hunting, and the outdoors. She loved to watch Mr. Dave fish and enjoyed migrating back and forth from Murdock to the Valley.
     Mrs. Dave is survived by her daughters Lynda, Prosser, Karen Swanson, Goldendale, Cheryl Emerson, Dallesport, Joleen Carstens, White Salmon, Marianne Kishwalk, Murdock, and Cindy Carstens, The Dalles; sons of Ralph Carstens, Dallesport, Robert Carstens, Shelton, and Richard Carstens, Carson; stepchildren Dwight Carstens, Vancouver, Dorothy Olson, Cathlamat, Floria Dave, Yakima, Leonard A. Dave Jr., Dallesport, Randy Dave, Wichita, Kan., Leon Dave, Diane Dave, Sandy Dave, James Dave and Marie Dave, all of Pendleton, Ore.; 30 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, and three great, great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband Ralph Carstens and son John Carstens who died in 1987.
     A funeral service for Maxine Dave was held on Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, at 10 a.m. at Gardner Funeral Home in White Salmon with burial following at Lyle Balch Cemetery in Lyle.
