"Mrs. Mary Smith died at the home of her son, L.B. Smith, in this city last Sunday night, July 9, after an illness of nearly six months having suffered a paralytic stroke on Jan. 26 of the present year.  She was born in Nicholas county Kentucky May 1 1829.  Her maiden name was Owen.  She moved to Missouri in 1840, and on January 7, 1847 she was married to Wm. D. Smith.  To this union was born thirteen children nine boys and four girls.  One boy and one girl dying in infancy and the rest are still living.  With her husband and family in 1875 she moved to California, and in 1877 moved to the Willamette Valley.  In 1879 they moved to this county and settled on their homestead near Centerville. Here they lived until 1899 when Mr. Smith died.  Since that time she has made her home with her children.  Mrs. Smith united with the Christian church while young and has been a faithful member ever since.  The funeral was held at the Christian church in this city Tuesday afternoon, the funeral sermon being delivered by Elder Perry Underwood of Boyd, Ore., who had known the deceased since childhood."
